Back after a five-year break, Popular Science conducted a nationwide search to find early career researchers who are working on innovative solutions to some of today's most challenging problems. Joseph Cavanagh, Thomas Usherwood and Hossam Zaki each received Goldwater scholarships, which support students who plan to pursue research careers in the sciences, mathematics and engineering.
Brown University awarded a Research Achievement Award to Prof. Ou Chen. The Research Achievement Awards honor extraordinary scholars for their research across a wide range of academic disciplines. Prof. Chen's research showed that special nanoparticle building blocks can assemble themselves into a quasicrystalline lattice, an ordered structure with no discernible repeating pattern and exotic symmetries.
