Department of Chemistry

Graduate Leadership

The Graduate Student Leadership Committee (GSLC) builds community among our graduate students and postdocs.

The Graduate Student Leadership Committee (GSLC) is a group of graduate students from various lab groups throughout the department. The committee hosts events such as a weekly Journal Club and monthly socials.

Mission Statement

The Chemistry Graduate Student Leadership Committee (Chem-GSLC) aims to foster an inclusive, supportive, and thriving community in the Department of Chemistry. The Chem-GSLC accomplishes this mission by adhering to the following tenets:

  • The Chem-GSLC aims to strengthen interpersonal bonds between graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, faculty and staff by hosting and encouraging participation in social events on and off campus. Previously held events include game shows, seasonal socials, park cleanups, sport days, community service outreach, and professional development opportunities. These events help build lasting bonds between students and allow a space to give back to our community at the university, city, and state levels.
  • The Chem-GSLC serves as a mediator between students and faculty. We function as a mouthpiece for the student body, ensuring all departmental concerns are anonymously reported to staff and addressed seriously.
  • The Chem-GSLC aims to ensure that the entirety of the student body is made to feel welcomed as valued members of our community. This is accomplished through efforts to maintain a diverse representation in Chem-GSLC and direct partnerships with the departmental Diversity and Inclusion Action Committee (DIAC) and the Coalition for International Scholars (CISC).

Through our work we aim to improve the morale of our department and preserve the passion for chemistry which has guided each student to pursue higher education. It is our belief that adhering to the above tenets will ensure the success and happiness of our graduate student body.
