Russell Hopson

NMR Facility Supervisor

Biography

I was born in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Fauquier County, Virginia.  I received a B.S. in chemistry from George Mason University in 1994.  I completed my Ph.D. degree at Northeastern University in 2000 with a thesis titled “Synthesis and characterization of a selectively modified triple helix stabilizing ligand for use as an antigene agent”.  I worked as research scientist at Clariant Corporation in Coventry, RI synthesizing pigments for automotive coatings for two years before joining the Brown Chemistry Department in 2003.  I am responsible for the maintenance and oversight of the four high-field superconducting magnets in the department.  I train all new users in basic and advanced NMR methods and routinely collaborate with faculty on both research and NMR related curriculum for organic/inorganic laboratory experiments. Russ is affiliated with the American Chemical Society and Association of Managers in Magnetic Resonance Laboratories (AMMRL)
